OL Episode #1 – The Galaxy Being

Original Airdate: September 16, 1963

And we’re off. “The Galaxy Being” is a nice, smooth debut for the great series. While not usually picked by fans as a personal favorite, it certainly set the stage for what was to come with a sense of wonder about the universe and its possibilities. The Being, as the first bear, remains one of the most memorable, creatively produced and sympathetic. His stand-off with the military at the end reminds me of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” in some ways. As Gort handled the guns and tanks with a flash of his ray, the Being was impenetrable and demonstrated his capabilities on the station transmitter. - Then afterward, gave his would-be destroyers some food for thought as Klaatu did during the finale.

It’s always a joy watching a youthful Cliff Robertson as the main character, Alan Maxwell. (Was great seeing him as Uncle Ben in “Spiderman”(2002) too!) Already an established actor in 1963, his performance and presence gave credibility to the premiere. I enjoy his character throughout, but especially the scenes where he is first communicating with the Being. Astonished at first, he quickly regains composure to ask some awesome questions, such as:

"Where you are, do you have death? We have death. End of being." ~ Alan
“Death? No death here. Electromagnetic waves go on.” ~ Being
“Do my brainwaves go on?” ~ Alan
“Yes” ~ Being

“Do you have a God?” ~ Alan
“Electromagnetic waves underline everything.” ~ Being
“No, I mean... intelligent force. All powerful.” ~ Alan
“Electromagnetic waves intelligent. Infinity. God is infinity. All the same.” ~ Being

Hard to believe it’s over 40 years since the ep first graced the airways. It was all the rave in the schoolyard the next day. For this 8-year old and his buddies, all we could talk about was that cool creature. The show made Mondays a day to look forward to. We kept wondering what neat monster or thing would be next. It’s going to be fun reliving the series once more.

End of transmission...

HYDROGEN STATIC AT 21 CENTIMETERS

Postby Preston on October 7th, 2005, 1:36 pm

Behind the scenes: Writer Leslie Stevens did his homework as far as the COMMUNICATORY method used by the Galaxy Being. This is seen in the line spoken by Cliff Robertson > "Scanning HYDROGEN static coming in at a frequency of 21 centimeters."(End of quote) Because in astronomy, all stars contain HYDROGEN which emit RADIO waves at a wavelength of 21 CENTIMETERS. Those waves have to be ionized too, although I'm Not too familiar with ionization. But maybe YOU are, Lunk.
So Leslie Stevens had both the hydrogen and the wavelength's centimeters down pat, knowing as he did that this would be the logical and plausible way to attempt communication with another planet, that is, to use those Hydrogen waves as an instrument of transmission.
In addition, Lunk, I have still more to comment on this milestone episode as far as my speculation as to what could have inspired and influenced Leslie Stevens to pen this story. I do Not mean its resemblance to "Day the Earth Stood Still" but instead to something else, something which was NOT a film but a magazine. More comments to come.

Very interesting Preston. They did try to reference real science when they could. I'm not familiar with ionization either, but the wave theories are cool in the ep.

Allyson Ames

MORE behind-the-scenes: Remember the scene where Alan's BROTHER Gene is romancing a Blonde in a car. That Blonde lady is played by Allyson Ames who at that time was the REAL Wife of Leslie Stevens who wrote and directed that episode.

More data and comments to come.
