#3 - MEN IN BLACK (1934)

Postby Lunkhead on June 9th, 2005, 7:36 pm

Image

"Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard!" The boys' third outing features them as 3 not-overly-bright young doctors given the chance to devote themselves to the glorious cause of DUTY AND HUMANITY. And with that opportunity, Los Arms Hospital never knew what hit it.

Image

This is the only stooge entry to receive an oscar nomination. It lost out to the cartoon short LA CUCARACHA. I love the shear bizarre atmosphere and bits. True the characters take a backseat to the one liners and oddball setups, but the boys pull it off in top form. Some fans think it too strange, but it's my personal favorite. I laugh hysterically every time.

Image "Look! Great, big, giant, green canaries!" Billy Gilbert's mad patient is an outstanding highlight. I wish he could have worked with the stooges more. (The only other short he was in was PARDON MY SCOTCH).

Image

Still early in their role development, Curly gets slapped and pushed around, but retains a bit of his WOMAN HATERS toughness (like when he throws the cotton in an enraged Moe's face and douses Billy with a bucket of water)

"Let's pluck him and see if he's ripe" ~ :larry1: One of my favorite mad Larry moments ever.

Image ~ Moe prepares to begin the operation on Dr. Graves! :laugh1:

MIB is another short I saw very early on. Jeannie Roberts' zany nurse voice and the loud speaker have forever remained in my memory banks.

this is a great one, and "for duty and humanity" has never been the same phrase again. i use it to this day, in the true Stooge sense of the words.

Cracks me up every time, the final scene where the boys go ballistic on the loud speaker control board, ripping it to smithereens and finding the voice coming from a tiny transistor. Moe pulls out a revolver and blasts away, bullets ricocheting all over the joint and kills the voice dead.

You can't say the phrase "Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard" without getting some kind of response.

True story here for all of you.
I was attending a world wide on-line training class where we had a live instructor talking to us through our speakers while we watched our monitors through the course. We were able to type questions in a chat format to him and he answered them along the way.
Anyway, at the end of one class he apologized that he was going in for an operation and would be away for a couple of weeks. I didn't hesitate on this opportunity, I typed in "Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard" which was followed by the instructor choking back the muffled laughter and finally succumbed to busting out loud in front of the class.

Of all the stooge shorts this is one of my top 10 favorites. Did anyone else notice the big shard of glass in the back pocket of the repair man after the boys break another window out of the door?

My favorite short and a true classic. And yes, I love that piece of glass stickin out of the repairmain's back pocket.

That's a great story about the training class Kitty. It's super that the instructor recongnized it and responded. Click on this link to hear the famous loudspeaker => http://mywebpages.comcast.net/hpack/drhoward.wav

Then click on this link to see a little tribute to the 3 famous Docs => http://lunkhead.net/anime6.html Note the superior graphics developed for the scene. :teeth1:

Somewhat more manic than the Stooge shorts that follow, more in a Marx Bros./vaudevillian form. The boys have lots of energy at this stage in their careers. Some good character bits from Billy Gilbert, Jeanie Roberts, and Del Henderson (all 2-reel veterans), playing parts almost as offbeat as the Stooges themselves (I always have to laugh at Henderson ordering schnapps on the operating table).

Lots of memorable lines in this. Two personal favorites:

1. It's hard for me to resist, any time I go to the doctor, asking whether he graduated with the highest temperature in his class.

2. The dialogue routine on "Anaconda" has relevance for me, inasmuch as I live about 70 miles from the site of the old Anaconda copper mines (world's largest at the time Men In Black was filmed) in Anaconda (near Butte), MT.

Unusual number of running gags in this one, which are developed in parallel rather than consecutive fashion; moreover, all the running gags are consequentially linked (The "Dr Howard, Dr Fine, Dr Howard" gag precipitates the broken glass door gag, which in turn is linked to the recurring gag of different modes of transport). Very tight comedy construction there.

BTW interesting that in the one-sheet poster depicted in Lunk's initial post, the boys are still billed formally as "Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Jerry Howard".

Piece of trivia: director Raymond McCarey was younger brother of Leo McCarey.

"A 'Tonic' For The Blues"! Nah, give him a Coca Cola.

An enjoyable short for sure. I believe it was nominated for an Academy Award , but lost out to an animated feature. The boys were robbed !!

A very good short when you're in the mood for a Stooge short that seems very different from the others. I wonder why Jeannie Roberts got top billing with the boys instead of Bud Jamison, who was already in at least 1 short with the boys (Woman Haters). What notable things had she done in films by this time, besies possibly being the voice for Betty Boop? But she is funny here as the ditzy, hiccupping nurse.

Why oh why wasn't Billy Gilbert in more Stooges shorts? His mental patient scene was great. I wish I would've recited his lines in high school drama class when I had the chance!

The running gag with the shattering door glass, the different modes of transportation through the hallways and the surgery are the Stooges' best parts IMO. This short has so many gags and great characters that the writers really outdid themselves planning it!

Just checked and still didn't see anything restored at the old Xenorama. Still, it could be a matter of getting to their final restores which could be another week or 2.

If the posts return, using Internet Explorer, you can highlight all the posts on one page using your mouse. Then click "Edit" -- "Copy". Then in one post at your new board, you can click "Edit" -- "Paste" and they should plop right in.

I really hope your posts are restored Megs. Let me know if you need any help if they come back.
